Controller Review & Close Control

How I turn incomplete finance records into a clear close position, a controlled action package, and a process the next operator can actually use.

The problem

The hardest close problems are not math problems. They are source, cutoff, identity, and authority problems.

Reports disagree. Prior work is stale. A balance may look wrong but still lack the evidence needed for a correction. The controller has to find the current truth, show what remains uncertain, and keep the company moving without turning missing support into a plug.

The operating method

Each step narrows uncertainty before anyone changes the books.

01 / Scope Entity, period, basis, authority Know exactly what can be concluded and changed
02 / Sources Ledger, subledger, statement, contract Map what each source can actually prove
03 / Rebuild Opening + typed movement = ending Test the assertion instead of accepting the report
04 / Decide Ready, held, no action, or request Keep uncertainty visible and specific
05 / Verify Re-read the live result Confirm object, lines, dates, balance, and effect

What I did

Reconstruction first. Correction second.

Close stateRebuilt the current close position from accounting, banking, payroll, AP/AR, commerce, contracts, shared documents, and prior workpapers instead of trusting a dashboard status alone.
Balance sheetTested cash and clearing, payroll liabilities, deferred balances, AP/AR, inventory and COGS, tax, debt, and fixed assets with source-specific evidence.
Action designSeparated source edits, native-object fixes, journal entries, subledger applications, reporting refreshes, and no-action outcomes.
Close protectionUsed source-coverage checks, visible holds, duplicate guards, exact approval packets, and post-change verification.
HandoffConverted the result into a short controller brief, a readable workpaper, a clean action map, and a recurring process.

What the reviewer receives

Enough clarity to act quickly, with enough evidence to challenge the conclusion.

01

Decision brief

What changed, why it matters, what is ready, what is held, who owns the next step, and what decision is needed.

Built for a CEO, CFO, or controller
02

Action package

Only current, supported actions appear in the front door. Drafts, analysis-only work, and superseded versions stay outside the action path.

Clear upload, attach, avoid, and verify guidance
03

Recurring control

A workpaper or runbook with source fields, formulas, exception gates, owner/reviewer states, duplicate checks, and readable instructions.

Designed for the next month, not only the cleanup

Controls and boundaries

The limits are part of the work, not legal copy at the bottom.

Control Coverage can block completion

If a required source is missing or stale, the run stays partial and the checkpoint does not advance.

Control Every action is traceable

Material work keeps its source, owner, status, approval need, expected result, and verification record.

Boundary No unsupported balancing entries

An unexplained difference remains a named hold. It does not become a convenient adjustment.

Privacy The underlying records remain private

This case excludes employer and client identities, balances, transaction details, credentials, and private communications.

Why this matters in a contractor role

I can enter a messy environment, get to the source of the problem, and leave both a defensible answer and a better operating process.
